Dateline Africa: 4-10-26
We flew from DTW to Atlanta. Had a 3 hour layover and then a 14 hour flight to Cape Town, South Africa. A driver was waiting to take us to our hotel for the next 5 nights…The Rockefeller Hotel. We ate a late dinner at 8 pm (which was really 2 pm in our world). Sleep was difficult… it’s interesting how time change affects you. We were glad we got here a day earlier than the tour.
Our first day we spent exploring V and A waterfront-restaurants, shops and attractions.
Day 2 we met our guide and fellow travelers (17 of us) at breakfast and then off to a full day. We went up the cable car to Table Mountain and took a ferry to Robben Island (think Alcatraz) where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned as a political prisoner for 18 of his 27 years in prison. We went to dinner with our group on the waterfront.
Day 3 (today) we drove down the peninsula to Cape of Good Hope (southern most point in Africa), rode a funicular and walked up to Cape Point’s lighthouse, had a seafood lunch with the group and saw ostriches and penguins!! Who’d of thought?!. The African penguins were super cute just hanging out at the beach. Tonight we are going to a traditional African dinner (16 courses…I don’t think I can eat that much!) with entertainment (singing/dancing…I’m thinking it’s the African version of a luau).
We are loving Africa!
