March, Our Irish Legacy

Through the years, playing Irish music for many appreciative fans has been one of the most rewarding things we have ever done as a duo.  The ritual sighting of the little green Leprechaun has always seemed to foretell the promise of spring right around the corner.

It is always OUR start to a new music year.  We begin (unofficially) with St. Patricks’ Day and segue from there right into our yacht-rock spring and summer.  By then the long Michigan summer usually doesn’t give in to fall until the mid-weeks of October, when we are no longer entertaining outside.  So you see, we can’t wait to get this party officially started!

We begin at East Harbor Senior living home, where we have been for years now in spring.  Singing all our Irish favorites has turned into their favorite entertainment event of the year.  Next, we have been asked to be part of an Irish wake.  A celebration for a wonderful family we played for, 24 years ago.

After being invited back to sing at The Fifth Tavern in Clarkston, we will return once more to Saint Clair Shores and the Blossom Heath Irish Celebration on Saturday.  After packing it all back in the van we were heading to Lake Orion, where we were to once again be part of St. Practice day at Canterbury Village.  However, due to strong winds, the power went out in the entire area, and the event was cancelled.  Maybe next year will work out better.

Bumper’s Landing will be epic this summer, as they are in the throes of a full-scale expansion.  Just being a part of that craziness is something we will always remember.

February, Time To Get Away

February

Since we have traditionally played music all spring, summer and fall for more than fifty years now, February has turned into one of the months where we have taken some time off to vacation and or travel.

Carl elected on cruise after cruise, and I went on a guys’ Handball excursion, and somehow this year, we both ended up in the same place and time for a few days.  Kool!

Then we went our own separate ways but reunited to play one gig at our favorite spot, Bumper’s Landing in Harrison township.

Bumper’s is always exciting and never what you might least expect.  Just love that place

January’s Silent Show

January, 2025

The new year didn’t exactly rush in like a bull for us.  It was more: quiet like a chipmunk stealing grain and hiding it under your patio furniture cushions.

Seriously, we had several gigs scheduled in January, but for various reason, were all cancelled at the last moment.  Weather, logistics and football were the main culprits.  No problem. It’s all entertainment, whatever we do and whatever the people want. We will certainly be there when its our time to shine.

There is a reason for most things, and I am sure in the grand scheme of things, the reason for a Bob and Carl No-Music January will avail itself in time.

In the meantime, Carl and I had the chance to work on songs and equipment to make 2025 a truly kick-ass summer. You might not know this, but most musicians work on their craft year-round to maintain that next level sound. We, for example play most every weekend at the same venues all summer. Our goal is for the regulars that frequent those venues to not get tired of us. It is a very difficult scenario as we are constantly updating both our musical catalog and our equipment. We try hard to stay relevant, and it can be costly. All part of being a Rock Star!

December’s Timeless Memories

December

There is a warmness about December that is not too difficult to describe. Friends, family and loved ones all gather together to share the goodness of the holidays, and the blessings within.  There might be only one thing that could make things better, music!

Through the years, Carl and I have had the chance to be able to share our musical gifts with the people we care deeply about and means so much to us.  When most folks think of the holidays, they imagine the warmth off the season being shared with food, friends, spectacle and music.

When Carl and I think of the holidays, we think of all the kids we have brought our Christmas spirit to, and how that joy will never be forgotten.  We also think of home; and our home-away-from-home is of course, Bumper’s Landing.   At Bumper’s we get to have food, drink and song with some of the most wonderful people that we have shared our lives with over the last ten years.

I certainly don’t have to tell you how crazy it is this time of year.  People going here and there, trying to make every detail of the holidays like a Christmas card.   It is a whirlwind of stress and hustle.

One of the best things about The Fifth Tavern in Clarkston is the fact that you can simply drop in at any time and there will turn it into an unforgettable experience.   Sitting ringside across from the bar, lets us join into the merriment as we try and sing everyone’s favorite classic hit. Such a great way to share in the true spirit of the holidays.

July, 2024

the sunshine of our love – july 2024 When the calendar turned it’s page to July, the cool and wet weather that was our Michigan, Spring finally got the message.
For most of the Spring, Carl and I had been battling the weekends that were either wet, cool, or both at the same time.   ...Continue reading...

May, 2024

promises, promises! – May, 2024 The promise of a new summer season is always just out of reach.  It is when Carl and I begin to prepare. ( in more ways than one).  We know that so many details need to be addressed, and as professional musician’s the very least of them is the music....Continue reading...

June, 2022

Living again – June, 2022

It was still very cool this spring; like winter would never let go of our souls; no matter how hard we tried.  Cool, wet but drama free, actually.  There were signs of a new season perched on the horizon, and then again, just as quickly, they were gone.  To say that more than once we were frustrated wouldn’t be an exaggeration; and yet, hope was never far away . . .

Suddenly, spring gave way to summer, and all at once, and it was glorious!

After so, so long our normality was back.  We could breathe again. We could sing again, we could live again.  And live we did!

Like the Munchkins from the Wizard Of Oz, everyone seemed to peek outside, gather their courage for a moment and then venture out to begin truly living once again.  We ventured out too!

Carl and I played some new venues in June, and made some wonderful memories in the process.  Wherever we ended up, we seemed to find more smiles and, “That you!s” along the way.  (Music never fails to make that connection if you play it right).

A huge part of the reason that people were feeling a greater sense of normalcy is their ability to return to places that they feel were comfortable.  Places they felt were like home.  (it kind of makes them feel normal again).

We were asked to entertain that The Beach Market in Charlotte Michigan.  It was a very long drive, but very interesting to play.  Folks were absolutely appreciative of our effort and how long we traveled to entertain them.  Lots of fun!

Of course we played several Saturday’s at Bumper’s Landing, Harrison Township.  What can we say that hasn’t been said by now?  Any given Saturday is a lot of work, but so rewarding.  We now have reached a new level lof comfort in playing Bumper’s  that we simply have never felt before.  It actually makes us even more conscious of ever minute detail of how the place runs and operates.  We are dialed in, and it makes us even better, I believe.

In June we also had the good fortune to return to the Country Club Of Lansing.  So beautiful, so relaxing and so enjoyable.  The journey is long, but the rewards are well worth it.  Actually we have been entertaining at country clubs for nearly fifty years now.  Look how beautifully maintained this venue is.  We are so lucky to be asked back.

I have taken many phots over the years.  I try to gather some quality shots at every event we play.  My goal is to tell the story with pictures as well as music, if I can.

In all honesty, I was very reluctant to approach people during the pandemic.  First of all I didn’t want to invade their space.  I didn’t wish to startle them.  In all actuality, pictures taken from a distance are just not what we need to tell out story when we play for people.  It’s that same connection that engaged people with music, that I feel I have to have when using my camera.  I am only now just feeling comfortable again putting people on the spot enough to capture their evening out for posterity.

Some things may work online, with FaceTime or even Zoom, but to really connect in a meaningful way, you need to be right there with them.  That is the part that you miss most of all, that connection that reaffirms how you have finally reached someone and made them feel things they can only feel with you.  Nothing can take the place of real honest contact, connection and emotions.

June was awesome, and it gave us so much hope that the summer would be everything we could hope for!  I only wish that you were part of it.

The Sound Of Music

Sometimes an entertainer will get to a place in their career when they lose sight of what got them there in the first place.  Talent, hard work and above all, being at the right place in the right time sure does help.  However, in the end, (as it was in the beginning), it is always about THE MUSIC.

Always.

Carl and I hardly ever forget that, but when we do, we are very fortunate that we have some great patrons who remind us, without fail.

And so it was on another night at Bumper’s Landing when we knew not what to expect.  The word on the street was that a huge crowd was on their way in to watch the big basketball game against Michigan and Michigan State.  Since the game began at eight, we would wait until it was finished before we would take the stage.

All good.

We arrived at our very same time, and began setting up in our usual way.  The goal was to be settled in and ready to start as soon as the big game concluded.

All well and good.  The game began and everyone was glued to the big screens.  You know how men are with huge television screens to keep them focused . . .

We were set up and ready, and in the zone.

When half time arrived, we kicked off the music, with Jimmy Buffett urging everyone to think about a trip to Margaritaville.  A couple more songs got the patrons thinking about anything but basketball, just in time for the game to begin its second half.

Of course, some games, just like men are bigger than others, and the second half of the game turned out to be a prelude to nothing as State ran away with the outcome.

That of course, left many of the Michigan faithful to head out early, and with it, our chance to play their favorite songs.

We did however, (as luck would have it), meet a group of guys who loved live music just as much as sport.  They stopped in to watch the rest of the game, but stayed to listen to our first set.

That was all it took.  They loved each song we played and we loved playing more and more of their favorites.

This is when it really gets enjoyable for Carl and I, when we have a group in front of us that we can interact with.

They shout out a musical favorite, and we play it.  Simple as that.

It really doesn’t get any better.

We actually played only two sets on Saturday night, the first one, an hour long, and the second an hour and a half.

But what sets they were!

We really, really enjoyed the evening, and owe it all to those five guys.  While it really IS about the music, a lot of times, it’s about the people we are lucky enough to play the music for.

After all, that’s why we play: for them.  Song after song, week after week, year after year.  It’s a great job most of the time.  And when some wonderful people are there appreciating our effort, it’s not a job at all!

Just Down The Street . . .

Just down the street  . . .

. . . . is your friendly neighborhood bar.

That probably can be said for just about any city street in America, but in Mount Clemens, this particular bar is special.

Why, you might ask?

The Green Tree Tavern, circa 1905Well, this bar has been dispensing liquor, refreshments and fellowship, in the same spot for more than one hundred years!

Think about that . . .

When carl and I were born, (way back in the fifties), this bar had already been serving its fellow man and woman for over a half century.

As if that by itself isn’t amazing enough, consider the fact that while most everything in our society has changed: automobiles in stead of horses, supersonic jets and drones in stead of propellor airplanes, the information revolution in stead of books and newspapers . . .

. . . our need to gather together to talk about or lives has not.

Something about sharing a pint just brings people from all walks of life together.

When alcohol is flowing, any of the worlds troubles and woes can be solved.  Or so it may seem.  It’s theThree Blind Mice Irish Pub, circa 2013 promise of clarity and coherence that binds like minds and sets them on the task of righting all the worlds’ wrongs.

We see it every night from our vantage point under the bright lights of the stage.  People working as one to solve all the riddles before their drinks are dry.

Lucky for us, we provide the sound track to the solution.

If only the worlds’ leaders would come down from their lofty perches to walk among us common people, they would certainly learn a lot.  They might even have the daunting issues of world hunger, climate change and most government boondoggles resolved in one afternoon.

Well, we’ll be here at the Mice, sipping a brew and solving all the world’s problems.  We might even share a story, a joke or a song.

The world can be a cruel place if you choose to go it alone.  Why do that?  Stop by your local neighborhood pub or watering hole.

If it wasn’t the solution, then why was your great grandfather here sharing a pint?

Party In Waiting

It’s going to be an amazing summer at Bumper’s Landing!

Trouble is, the summer hasn’t quite arrived yet.  Oh, we’re ready all right; ready as we’ll ever be.

The only problem is Mother Nature isn’t quite there yet.

Don’t check the calendar, check the thermometer.

Just when we think that old man winter has loosened his grip, BAM! we get knocked back to reality by the Bomb Cyclone of 2019!

Yes, I realize that everybody gripes about the weather, but no one really does anything about it; but that’s not going to stop me from lamenting the fact that if the weather would even semi-cooperate, we might have some people to entertain.

As it was however, it was a very slow night.  We did get the chance to chat with some great people again.  (The up-side to a slow night).  However, in the end, with everyone involved, it would be nice to have a big crowd come by and take full advantage of the hard-working staff that was in place and ready to handle the crowd.

Time and time again we have lamented the fact that at Bumper’s Landing . . . we never know what is about to happen on any given day.

Located on the water, Bumper’s is at the whim of the “lake effect”.  Whatever weather conditions are prevalent, greatly effect wether people come out and stop by.

On a sunny summer-like day, our Michigan beaches and waterways are swelling with potential patrons, sometimes lined up five boats deep.  But, when the winter months arrive, and all the boats are docked, it becomes much more difficult to get customers to drive the long way out to the lake to lift a beer.

When the big thaw begins, they will be back and ready to soak up the sun; but until then, while the weather is hit or miss, so then are our nights.  Frustrating to be sure, but all part of the life of a rock star.

We set up early, eagerly preparing for an evening designed to share our musical talents.  Adjusting each nuance, string and volume knob until it was time to share our first melody.

The diners were ready to be entertained, and we were more than ready to oblige.  As usual, Jimmy Buffett was the ambassador wee chose to greet the first listeners.  A time-honored Bob and Carl tradition that pre-dates actual time itself.

Easily enjoyed, it was then up to us to follow that one up with another crowd pleaser.  After some cowboy music rattled the rafters, the word came to us that it was time to inquire just what to do with a certain drunken sailor.

Nothing could possibly have pleased us more.  Sure we played some Irish, and then another and then another for good measure.

Blasting right into a great set of oldies before anyone knew what hit them, gave us the confidence to try some songs that weren’t as easily recognizable.

We played some Bob Dylan and some Beatles music that maybe didn’t receive the amount of attention that they should have in the pantheon of musical greatness.  (When it is slower, we have a little more latitude to steer the evening in a completely different direction.)

The crowd seemed appreciative, as they usually are at Bumper’s Landing.  They are very happy people, remember.  (we’ve talked about this.)

As the night wore on, and the alcohol paved the way for plenty of poor decisions, the weather outside refused to give up on its winter-like impersonation of a cold dark, dreary house guest.  One that you can tolerate for a few hours, but in the end excuse yourself early to rid yourself of.

So when eleven rolled around we found ourselves bereft of all but the heartiest of customers.  It was a wonderful evening, but time to pack things up and head home.

Our next visit to Bumper’s will be a just a little bit closer to the coming of spring.  We are so over that old man winter that if he shows his ugly head, we might just ignore him all together.

His power is waning, and let’s face it, we have songs to sing!
